Small Groups

Purpose: Small group and individual counseling focus on three domains: academic, personal/social, and career development. Students are referred to small groups or individual counseling by teachers, other school staff, and/or parents. Working with students in small groups is one strategy for helping students become more successful. Small group work can benefit students by bringing them together to work on a shared goal or issue. Small groups give students the opportunity to share their ideas and support one another. Small groups are assembled based on the needs of students.

Process: The ConVal district uses the Response to Intervention (RtI) model, which involves a strategic approach to instruction, assessment, and intervention. Instructional Support Teams (ISTs) meet at each school to plan and implement academic or behavioral interventions to support students. Small group or individual counseling referrals often come from the IST team. Parents are welcome to refer students for small groups as well.

Examples: The focus of Small Group or Individual Counseling might include study skills, problem solving, friendship, self-regulation, managing anger, social thinking, changing families, or grief and loss.

Logistics: Permission slips are sent home and signed by a parent/guardian before a student participates in a small group. Parents are always welcome and encouraged to discuss their students with the school counselor.
